How to get a stuck ring off your finger
In a grand, romantic gesture, your beloved has just put a ring on your finger. And since you don’t want to ruin your engagement ring while exercising to get in shape for that gorgeous wedding dress you’ve had your eyes on even before meeting Prince Charming, you want to take it off. And now is the moment you discover there is more than one “forever” in this deal. Yep, it won’t come off no matter how hard you try and this is more than what you signed up for. Engagement rings, cocktail rings, rings in a jewelry shop or simply family heirlooms – it happens to the best of us. That claustrophobic feeling when you realize that the ring on your finger is there to stay, no matter how hard you try to get it off. So what do you do?
Don’t force the stuck ring off multiple times!
If you do that, chances are that the stuck ring won’t come off anyway. Instead, you’ll hurt your finger and make it even more swollen. Before you know it, that stuck ring will start hurting and you will be nowhere close to getting it off.
Ice it up
To get that stuck ring off your finger, you first need to take the swelling down. Get some ice from the fridge, raise your hand and apply the ice to your finger. Wait for a couple of minutes and gently try to take the ring off. If that doesn’t work, then don’t panic. There are other methods to get a stuck ring off the finger.
Hand sanitizer is your friend (unless you have an open wound)
Apply hand sanitizer to your finger and wait for a couple of moments. This solution is not only a lubricant, but it also shrinks the skin temporarily. Using hand sanitizer can help you get that stuck ring off your finger, but make sure you don’t have an open wound around that area. If you do, it will hurt a lot and you could irritate the area even more.
Try hand lotion or Vaseline
Most rings would come off by now but, in case you are dealing with ringzilla, it’s time to take out the big guns. Get some dental floss and slide it under the ring to have something to hold on to when your hand will get slippery. Apply lotion or Vaseline to your finger and tug gently with the dental floss to get the stuck ring to move. Again you should only do this if you don’t have an open wound or broken skin. If you do, then it’s best to skip to the next step.
The classic soap & water
We usually don’t recommend this method to get a stuck ring off your finger because there is that little black hole called the drain. We also know that rings don’t especially like water, but, if nothing else won’t work, you can try this method as well. Just make sure that the drain is covered and, when you finally manage to get the stuck ring off, rinse it and dry it immediately.
However, if none of the DIY methods won’t work, the best thing you can do it to pay an emergency visit to the closest jewelry shop. The jeweler will have to cut the stuck ring off your finger and then repair it. Of course, this is not a free service but, on the other hand, reattaching a finger may be more expensive.
We know how it sounds, the thought of having your engagement ring cut, but it is not that bad. With ring resizing you get the same procedure and, usually the ring is fine. A platinum ring, however, will be more difficult to resize, but not impossible. And seriously speaking, if none of the at-home methods work, it is better to go to the jewelry shop than wait for the ring to magically become unstuck. This won’t happen but, if it squeezes too hard and your finger gets more and more swollen, it could seriously hurt you.
On the bright side, however, in 99% of the cases, you will be able to get your stuck ring off following our methods.
