Stacked rings are the hottest trend at the moment but women used to wear them before they even emerged as a trend. Ring soldering has been a custom for engagement rings for many years now. Perhaps this is where the trend started and then moved to fashion jewelry. But we are not here to write about history. If you think of soldering your rings together, then you need to know the pros and cons of this practice. So, read further to find out everything you need to know about ring soldering and whether you should do it.

What is ring soldering?

Don’t worry, it’s not rocket science. In fact, ring soldering is, as the name suggests it, the process of fusing two separate rings into one jewelry piece. Women usually solder rings together when they want to fuse their engagement ring with the wedding band. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t solder other rings as well. In fact, women have started to solder different pieces to create a unique statement or cocktail ring. As with any other jewelry technique, though, this practice has its pros and cons. Let’s take a deeper look to discover them.

Ring soldering: Pros

As we said before, soldering two rings together can create a unique jewelry piece. After all, it is one partially designed by you, so it becomes very personal. Besides this, there are other advantages to rings soldering:

  • Reducing wear & tear. If you stack your rings and love this trend so much that you wear them stacked every single day, the two metals will always rub against each other. This also applies to wearing an engagement ring along with your wedding band. However, when you solder them together at the jewelry shop, the friction between the metals will cease. You will be able to wear your rings without fearing that they will get damaged.
  • Fix form. If you are annoyed when your rings slide and ruin the overall effect, ring soldering may be ideal for you. Through this process, you will fixate your rings in the desired position and they won’t spin around your finger anymore.
  • More comfort. When you wear two or more rings together, sometimes it doesn’t feel too comfortable. The skin between the two rings gets pinched and the gemstone hits your other fingers. With ring soldering, you get rid of all these problems and are able to wear your rings comfortably.

Ring soldering: Cons

Ring soldering may seem like an ideal choice, but not everything can be great about it. While it provides some great advantages, it also comes with a couple of cons.

  • Always together. This isn’t necessarily a good thing, though. If you get tired of wearing the rings together you can’t just detach them from one another. Also, in the case of a wedding band and engagement ring, you may find it uncomfortable. While wedding bands are usually simple and great to wear every day, engagement rings are not.
  • Risk of damage. If you get tired of wearing your rings together, you need to undo the ring soldering. This is easier said than done, of course. And while it is possible to undo it, there is also the risk of damaging your rings in the process.
  • More difficult to pass down. If you are a true romantic and dream of the day when you will pass down your engagement ring to your granddaughter or grandson, you shouldn’t solder your rings. Nobody wants to wear a family heirloom that is attached to a wedding band.

Ring soldering recommendations

Now that you know the pros and cons of ring soldering, it is up to you to make a choice. We recommend soldering your rings only if you are a hundred percent certain that you want to wear them together. When it comes to wedding bands and engagement rings, try wearing them together for a couple of months, every day. If, after a couple of months you still want to wear them together, then perhaps ring soldering is a good option for you.

For other rings, however, we don’t recommend it because it can decrease the wearability of a piece. Ring soldering can make the new piece harder to match with other jewelry, as well as with your outfits. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. If you have a creative idea to transform two separate classic pieces into a statement one, go for it. Make sure you find a great jewelry shop that can solder your rings together and let your imagination run free.
